OBJECTIVES

Sludges produced in water/wastewater treatment plants should be processed and disposed to complete the overall treatment process in accordance with environmental health criteria. The Department of Environmental Engineering at DEU has organized the “First National Sludge Symposium- NSS2005” in 2005. During this symposium, some of the sessions were conducted in English and the department hosted Prof. L. Spinosa from Italy, and Prof. S.K. Dentel from the USA, as keynote speakers. The strong positive feedback obtained from this symposium which took place in Izmir, indicated that further symposiums on sludge management should be organized in Turkey in order to continue this momentum. Dokuz Eylul University and Middle East Technical University have jointly organized IWA Specialist Conference on Facing Sludge Diversities: Challenges, Risks, and Opportunities, 28-30 March, 200, in Antalya, Turkey. This event also guaranteed similar outcomes. Therefore, DEU has intended to organize the Second National Sludge Symposium- NSS2009 that will be held on November 04-06, 2009, in Izmir. It will provide a forum for researchers, engineers, consultants, and practitioners to discuss and exchange the latest developments in sludge management. This symposium will offer a good opportunity for all participants to make a network and discuss important issues on sludge management.
