The figure shows step 1, install the Oracle Database on the hardware cluster to install a cold failover cluster database. Two nodes, cluster node 1 (active) and cluster node 2 (standby), are in a hardware cluster. Vendor clusterware runs on each node. Both nodes are connected to a shared storage. Cluster node 2 connects to the shared storage only on failover.

In this step, you install a new Oracle home for the cold failover cluster database on the shared storage. This is the database for the OracleAS Metadata Repository. The database runs on cluster node 1. It runs on cluster node 2 on failover.

In this step, you also transfer data from the source OracleAS Metadata Repository to the cold failover cluster database that you just installed.

The nodes in the hardware cluster are also associated with a virtual hostname and IP. This virtual hostname and IP are associated with cluster node 2 only on failover.
