This manual is intended for Oracle Application Server system administrators who are responsible for installing, maintaining, and upgrading Oracle Application Server instances. It is assumed that the readers of this manual have knowledge of the following:

This chapter identifies terminology used in the guide and describes the upgrade processes for middle tier and Infrastructure installation types, including valid upgrade paths.
Chapter 2, "Understanding Version Compatibility"
This chapter describes scenarios where you must run multiple versions of Oracle Application Server simultaneously. The goal of this chapter is to help you understand how to support your systems while you are in the process of upgrading to 10g Release 2 (10.1.2)
Chapter 3, "Backup Strategies and System Availability During an Upgrade"
This chapter provides guidelines for planning an upgrade. It discusses devising an upgrade strategy, upgrade tasks, system downtime, and system availability during upgrade.
Chapter 4, "Upgrading the Middle Tier"
This chapter contains instructions for starting and using the Oracle Application Server Upgrade Assistant, and instructions on completing the upgrade.
Chapter 5, "Upgrading Identity Management Services"
This chapter contains instructions on upgrading common OracleAS Identity Management configurations, such as those installed in a colocated Infrastructure, non-colocated Infrastructure, and distributed OracleAS Identity Management environments.
Chapter 6, "Additional OracleAS Identity Management Upgrade Procedures"
This chapter contains additional upgrade procedures of interest to customers with more advanced OracleAS Identity Management environments or who are interested in the data migration method of OracleAS Identity Management upgrade.

This chapter contains instructions for upgrading the component schemas in the OracleAS Metadata Repository, as well as the database that hosts the OracleAS Metadata Repository.

This chapter describes how to upgrade Oracle Application Server standalone components and Oracle Application Server components that are installed separately from the other Oracle Application Server components.
Chapter 9, "Upgrading High Availability Configurations"
This chapter describes information about upgrading Oracle Application Server high availability configurations, including OracleAS Cold Failover Cluster configurations.
Appendix A, "Component Upgrade Process Reference"
This appendix describes the processing performed by the OracleAS Upgrade Assistant and, if applicable, component schemas. It lists the upgrade items (files or schemas) involved in each process.
This appendix lists all of the files affected by the Oracle Application Server upgrade. It provides the path to the file from the Oracle home and indicates whether the file is processed manually or by the OracleAS Upgrade Assistant. It also provides a brief description of each file.
Appendix C, "Upgrade and Compatibility Error Messages"
This appendix provides information about the error messages you may encounter when upgrading your Oracle Application Server installations or when running multiple versions Oracle Application Server.
Appendix D, "Troubleshooting Upgrade"
This appendix describes common problems that you might encounter when upgrading to Oracle Application Server Release 2 (10.1.2) and explains how to solve them.
This revision of the Oracle Application Server Upgrade and Compatibility Guide provides updates, fixes, and clarifications to the Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) upgrade procedures documented in the initial release of the guide.
The following sections describe the changes introduced in the subsequent revisions.
Revision 2 of this guide (identified by the -02
part number on the title page) included minor updates, fixes, and clarifications, including new high availability upgrade procedures that were not finalized in time for the initial release of the guide.
Revision 3 of this guide (identified by the -03
part number on the title page) was introduced with Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2) and included the following new information:
Chapter 1, "Things You Should Know Before Upgrading" now provides an introduction to the Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) releases, as well as considerations and restrictions when upgrading to these releases.
Chapter 4, "Upgrading the Middle Tier" now contains a checklist to help you make sure the 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) destination Oracle home is installed correctly in preparation for a middle tier upgrade.
Chapter 4, "Upgrading the Middle Tier" also contains new information about completing the upgrade of your OracleAS Forms Services and OracleAS Reports Services components, which are now available in the 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2) release.
A new Chapter 6, "Additional OracleAS Identity Management Upgrade Procedures", provides a new, alternative data migration method of upgrading your OracleAS Identity Management environment.
Chapter 7, "Upgrading the OracleAS Metadata Repository" contains updated requirements and guidelines when upgrading the database that hosts your OracleAS Metadata Repository.
Chapter 9, "Upgrading High Availability Configurations" contains new and updated procedures for upgrading 10g (9.0.4) OracleAS Cold Failover Cluster and Rack-Mounted High Availability environments.
Appendix D, "Troubleshooting Upgrade" contains some new troubleshooting tips that can help you solve common problems with the upgrade process.
Revision 4 of this guide (identified by the -04
part number on the title page) includes minor bug fixes and improvements, as well as the following significant changes:
Chapter 1, "Things You Should Know Before Upgrading" includes more detailed information about Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.0) and 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2).
Chapter 2, "Understanding Version Compatibility" includes a revised compatibility matrix, which now includes references to the compatibility between 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.0) and 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2).
High-level tasks for upgrading the middle tier, OracleAS Identity Management, and the OracleAS Metadata Repository are now called out in the heading titles of the appropriate chapter. Each high-level task is called out with a prefix, such as Task 1, Task 2, and so on.
Chapter 4, "Upgrading the Middle Tier" includes updates to the section on completing the OracleAS Reports Services upgrade, which was introduced in Revision 3, and a new section on verifying the location of OracleAS Web Cache wallets after the middle tier upgrade is complete.
Chapter 5, "Upgrading Identity Management Services" includes a new section on modifying access control policies after the Oracle Internet Directory upgrade.
Chapter 7, "Upgrading the OracleAS Metadata Repository" now contains a summary of the OracleAS Metadata Repository database version requirements in the section on upgrading the database that hosts the OracleAS Metadata Repository.
Appendix C, "Upgrade and Compatibility Error Messages" now contains error messages specific to the upgrade of OracleAS Forms Services.
Appendix D, "Troubleshooting Upgrade" includes two new troubleshooting items that users might encounter while upgrading to 10g Release 2 (10.1.2).
Revision 5 of this guide includes bug fixes and improvements, as well as the following significant changes:
Chapter 1, "Things You Should Know Before Upgrading" now includes a fourth rule in Section 1.4, "Upgrade Rules to Follow".
Chapter 5, "Upgrading Identity Management Services" now includes two additional OracleAS Identity Management post-upgrade operations, which are described in the following new sections:
Chapter 5, "Upgrading Identity Management Services" also includes a new OracleAS Single Sign-On post-upgrade task in Section 5.6.5.13, "Removing Obsolete OracleAS Single Sign-On Partner Applications"
