Mobile Phones

The major GSM operators in Turkey are Turkcell, Vodafone and Avea. You can use your mobile phone in Turkey if your provider has enabled international roaming. However if you intend to stay for a long time in the country or make several calls, it may be preferable to buy a local prepaid SIM card. Take your mobile phone and passport to a Turkish mobile phone shop where your new SIM will be registered along with your handset's IMEI number and your personal information. (Unregistered phones will be blocked and unable to receive or make calls.) Turkey has very wide mobile coverage networks so you shouldn't have any problems in the main cities and tourist resorts.

Electricity

220 volts AC, 50Hz. The European two-pin plug is standard.

Time Zone

Two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2), all over Turkey.

Currency

The monetary unit is the Turkish Lira. 1 usd= 1.80 TL,  1 Euro 2.30 TL.

Exchange rates are published daily in Turkish newspapers.

Turkish Lira is available in the following denominations:
Banknotes: 5, 10, 20, 50,100 and 200 TL Coins: 5, 10, 25 & 50 Kuruş and 1 TL

Cash point machines (ATM) are available in most areas, which accept major credit and debit cards and give instructions in English. Usually, cash can be exchanged without charging commission in exchange offices and banks.

Credit Cards

Visa, Master and American Express cards are widely accepted in Turkey.
Visitors with other cards should ask in advance if their card is acceptable before using it. The exchange of traveler's checks is possible at Post Offices and at certain banks.

Bank Information

Generally, weekday working hours are 09:00 to 17:00 h. Visitors from overseas should check with their own bank whether they will be able to gain access to banking facilities they may need. If Turkish currency is needed when the banks are closed, it could be obtained at the exchange offices in large department stores, at one of the many independent Exchange Offices. Regulations require all Exchange Offices to clearly display all exchange rates and full details of any fees and rates of commission.
