Stroke is one of the most common cause of death in adult population. Morbidity rate associated with stroke is high. An early diagnosis of ischemia may allow prompt initiation of treatment to reduce mortality and morbidity. The basic purpose of new developing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques (MR angiography, MR spectroscopy, diffusion and perfusion imaging) is to detect and follow up the areas of acute infarction and ischemic areas at risk of infarction. These new MRI techniques can provide complete structural, functional, and metabolic information about the ischemic human brain and may offer the ability to monitore of therapeautic interventions. In this review article, these new MRI techniques were emphasized.
