Early
History:
The
island has been invaded, sold and transferred from one ruler to another,
because it was on the main routes between Europe and Asia. In the course
of its history, the island has witnessed many ruling forces, which can be
listed as such: Assyrians(707-650) Egyptians (570-546) .....
1964-1974:
The
political conflict between the two communities on the island began in 1878,
when Greek Cypriots desired ENOSIS (
Union
with
Greece
)
and Turkish Cypriots rejected it. In 1955, Greek Cypriots had started an armed
campaign of terror in order to unite the island with
Greece
,
while Turkish Cypriots rejected and resided the colonization by
Greece
.
Therefore, by having Turkey, Greece, and Great
Britain as
the guarantor powers, the International Treaties of 1960, named the
Republic
of
Cyprus
......
After
1974:
Turkey
,
one of the guarantor states, called upon
Britain
,
as the other guarantor, for joint intervention, but the British politicians
declined to take action. On
20
July 1974
,
Turkey
intervened
exercising its legitimate right granted to it under the article 4 of the
Treaty of Guarantee of
16
August 1960
,
to end the problem in
Cyprus
.
On 25-30 July 1974, Foreign Ministers of Turkey,
Greece
and
the
UK
,
held a conference on
Cyprus
in
Geneva
