As Engineering Faculty of Dokuz Eylul University, it is our great pleasure to host you in Izmir, third biggest city of country, in the frame of International Seismology and Earthquake Hazard Assessment Training Course by UNESCO and GFZ Potsdam (GeoForschungsZentrum. Berlin. Izmir Section of this course will be one week between 10-16 October 2010 under the auspices of Engineering Faculty and Geophysical Engineering Department in the Campus of Tinaztepe-Kaynaklar Buca, and whole course will be continued during five weeks in different cities and institutions of the country such as Kandilli Observatory in Istanbul, TUBITAK Marmara Research Center in Gebze, Kocaeli University in Izmit, Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency in Ankara, and Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir. Our faculty is main organizer for the Izmir Section of this course. | ||
We believe that the GFZ-2010 in Izmir will continue to stimulate intensive information dissemination and know-how transfer, as well as to promote and maintain an international network directed toward nurturing young researchers through a sustained international collaborative effort. As local organizers of Izmir, we also excite by the opportunity to realize some social facilities. Hence, GFZ-2010 Izmir aims not only to promote vast training and research habitudes, but also to organize prosperous social activities for you. As a joint organization with GFZ Potsdam, a broad range of research topics will be showcased in different cities of Turkey, so that a new multilateral research platform that disseminates state-of-the-art information, new illustrations and emerging mitigation technologies, and promotes new educational initiatives will be formed. Education will be given to the 28 young participants who come from different geography such as Eastern Europe, Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. Countries and numbers of the guests are: Albania-1, Azerbaijan-2, Bulgaria-1, Bhutan-1, Algeria-1, Armenia-1, Georgia-1, Iran-2, Macedonia-1, Egypt-2, Nepal-1, Kazakstan-2, Kyrgyzstan-1, Pakistan-1, Saudi Arabia-1, Uzbekistan-1, Tajikistan-1, Jordan-1, Turkey-6. | ||
The training course may be also reinforced new international collaborations and facilitated open exchange of state-of-the-practice research findings with the aim of improving seismic hazard assessment and risk mitigation. The GFZ-2010 Izmir section is committed to three major themes: 1) Direct and induced effects of strong earthquake ground motions, 2) Microzonation, 3) Array measurements. We believe that GFZ Izmir meeting will be a privilege for international participants to work closely with many experts on these topics.
