You Have Found The Satan...!
Characteristics : Irregularly - bent trichomes, 0.8 micron in diameter and 50 - 150 micron in length, found
extending from the floc surface. Filaments composed of elongated, rod - shaped cells (0.8 - 2.4 micron); constrictions
at the septa give the appearance of a "chain of cells". No sheath and no attached growth. Gram negative and Neisser
negative. No sulfur granules.
Identification : Relatively small, non-motile filaments (50-150 µm). Bent or irregular shaped filaments with no
branching. Cells are rounded and appear as elongated rods (0.9 x 1.5 µm). No sheath, and no attached growth. Cell septa
clearly observed, with Indentations at cell septa. Filaments are found extending from the floc structure. Usually easy
to identify due to elongated cell structure. The filament staining is Gram negative and Neisser negative. No Neisser
stain (granules), Sulfur granules, negative S granules (S test), no Other cell inclusions.
Similar Organisms : None.
Environment : This filament is usually found in environments where there are septic wastes and sulfides and high
organic acids. It is commonly observed in activated sludge but rarely causes bulking. This filament is rarely found but
when found, usually found in environments where there low F/M (0.02-0.2) with simple sugars and organic acids.
Control : F/M can be changed by increased sludge wasting, changing from complete mix to plug flow or use of a
selector. Septic wastes can be altered by pre-aeration or pre-chlorination.
Rank : Rarely seen.
