Abstract of the talk
CNN Filters: Theory, Simulations and Applications in Image Processing
Orientation selective filtering has been used for various purposes in image processing and computer vision. Such filters are shown to have band-pass spatial frequency response tuneable to specific frequency and orientation. 2-D Gabor filters, whose spatial impulse response is a 2-D complex sinusoid modulated by the 2-D Gaussian, also belong to this class. It has recently been shown that a 2-D filter showing a Gabor-like behaviour can be implemented by CNNs.
This talk will concentrate on the theory simulations and application of such filters in image recognition with particular emphasis on handwritten character recognition and fingerprint enhacement.
The advantages of using CNNs lie in the fact that they can be implemented using analogue circuits that can operate with a speed much higher than those of their digital counterparts. The talk will be concluded with a discussion on the prospects of implementation of CNN image recognition systems using the CNN chip.
